SIA and Met Police in London-wide crackdown

Security Industry Authority

The Security Industry Authority supported law enforcement partners on Friday night [07 Dec] as part of a Metropolitan Police crackdown. Operation Condor is aimed at combating illegal activity in the night time economy across all London boroughs.

This is the latest police operation targeting those who flout licensing rules, including shops, pubs, clubs and unlicensed mini cabs.

SIA investigators were on the ground or in control rooms to support police teams working in Hackney, Havering, Redbridge and Sutton.

In total, 20 pubs, clubs and bars were visited with 82 individuals checked. Whilst the majority of those inspected were correctly SIA-licensed, a small number of offences were found.

At Kosho Bar in Romford, the police found a man wanted on warrant for a serious assault. At a bar in Sutton, there are concerns regarding a door supervisor who may have been working unlicensed. Investigators will meet with the security supplier that holds the contract at the venue. At Elbow Room in Shoreditch, two door supervisors were issued with warnings for breaking SIA licence conditions, because they failed to notify the SIA of a change of their address.

Final figures breakdown as follows:

• In Hackney, 3 venues were visited.  9 individuals inspected. Two warnings issued.
• In Havering, 3 venues were visited. 16 individuals inspected. One offence found.
• In Redbridge, 7 venues were visited. 32 individuals inspected. No offences were found.
• In Sutton, 7 venues were visited. 25 individuals inspected. One offence was found.

Investigators are liaising with police in Southwark regarding a doorman found working with a revoked licence.

Police in Greenwich carried out checks as part of Op Condor with no issues found.

The SIA and the police are now carrying out on-going enquiries regarding all the issues found and prosecutions may follow.

Dave Humphries, SIA Director Compliance, Intelligence and Communication said: “I’m pleased with the overall levels of compliance found as part of Operation Condor. The majority of security staff were deployed lawfully and we found only small pockets of non-compliance. The Met Police, like the SIA, want to ensure that London’s nightlife is such that the public can feel safe, whilst enjoying themselves in our city.

“I would like to remind businesses that they may only deploy operatives in accordance with the law.  Buyers of security services also need to verify that their security providers are operating within the law. Using unlicensed security operatives can damage your business reputation and potentially leave you vulnerable to criminal charges.”

Ways to See the Threat Before it Happens

Threat modelling is widely in use, whether knowingly or not, across every walk of life – and has been used since time immemorial to prioritise security defences. The only difference between the well-known risk assessments carried out by everyone and threat modelling in cyber security is the attempt to document and systemise it. I am hoping that this idea of formal threat modelling will be a useful tool for you to use in your future arsenal of available resources as a CP operator.

Keeping Your Edge: Building a Solid Foundation

Longevity, consistency and remaining relevant are some primary goals of all protectors. These factors are important when establishing a new contract and providing services for a new client. But what is equally important is the mindset that goes into those first days and weeks on the assignment. As such, I wanted to get the personal perspective of Vantrell Wilson, a close protection agent who I have trained with and worked alongside of for years now.

There are loads of fundamentals and characteristics that close protection shares with rugby league. There’s a lot of planning and preparation with video sessions, and you need to think about X, Y and Z before you think about A, B, and C in both. You’re always planning for the worst-case scenario, and you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.

Operating in Mexico – The Uncomfortable Truth

There are many misconceptions about close protection and private security operations in Mexico. As usual, most of the myths originate from Hollywood movies and fictional T.V. dramas. The realities of working as a bodyguard in Mexico are quite different, it’s definitely a lot more dangerous and a lot less glamorous than Hollywood would have you believe.

Keeping Your Edge – Measured Responses in Tour Security (Part II)

These challenges can take the form of unintentional harm coming by way of a prop, stage equipment, or something as simple as a slip and fall caused by a long dress and high heels.

Whenever we can, we as Protectors must try and anticipate, correcting or counteracting the occurrences that can cause this harm. This is usually done during the Site Advance at which time we do a walk-thru of the areas that the VIP will be visiting, in this scenario, the stage. It is at that time we will perform a visual inspection of the stage and the props, go hands-on with items the Protectee might come into contact with, such as the guard railing, and enlist the help of experts to answer questions that are beyond our realm of expertise, such as how the overhead lights are connected to the scaffolding.
